South Carolina homeowners to get millions in Obama mortgage relief money  South Carolina was among five states to be selected for mortgage relief in a program promoted by President Obama designed to curb foreclosures and aid families struggling to stay in their homes during this economic crisis. South Carolina is slated to get $138 million of the $600 million provided by the program. South Carolina is one of the more depressed states in the country. Unemployment rates in SC are the fifth highest in the country.

 

Great news for Nursing Mothers who have to work:  As part of the new health care reform, employers are mandated to allow these mothers special breaks for expressing milk (or breastfeeding?) for up to a year after the baby is born. Victory for the health of the little ones!

New Definitions for Organic Meat and Milk Issued  For years there has been an ambiguous loophole in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s organic label, one that simply stated animals must have “access to pasture” to be labeled organic.  The problem with this definition is that it is entirely too broad. Is an hour out on pasture once a week sufficient? Once a month or every few months, even? As you can see, pretty much anything went under the old rules.

Now, the USDA has announced new rules that say organic meat and milk must come from animals that have had access to pasture for at least four months of the year. Further, 30 percent of the animals’ feed must come from this grazing time.
