Hooray! We Rank above Brunei... We're nr. 37 in our World Health System Ranking!

France, Italy & San Marino have the best health care systems in the World. Why don’t we study them & take notes?

We’re below 36 countries and right above Brunei in our World Health system ranking, according to the World Health Organization.

Pharmaceutical companies paid lobbyists $22.5 MIL in the first three months of ’09 to protect their interests.  In contrast, Families USA, a consumer group on health care has spent $10,000 on lobbying this year after spending only $32,000 total in 2008.

If we don’t get involved, BIG $Money will win again…

*NOTE:  The World Health Organization's ranking of the world's health systems was last produced in 2000, and the WHO no longer produces such a ranking table, because of the complexity of the task.

I wish Western culture would be more open to Eastern principles regarding natural cures.  Then again, it is all about profit for big pharma.

Tony, tell me about it!  I have always treated everything holistically and I've encountered extremely STRONG reactions from the medical community.   After the initial aversion wears off, and with those individuals who are open minded enough, I've been able to coax doctors toward a more holistic approach.

If you listen to this video, Obama has actually incorporated large measures for health maintenance through more holistic approaches, thus I'm sure the medical community will do their best to kill his health care plan...

I am actually listening to the video as I am perusing AR and Twitter right now.  I hope you listen to this very important message!

I agree with Tony.  There are so many naturopathic medicines out there and herbal remedies that work very well.  But, the big pharmacies have the big government in their back pocket.  For a seemingly advanced society we have so many uninsured and so many unhealthy people in this country that get forgotten.  Insurance companies won't cover individuals who do not fit into their criteria - if you are over weight but otherwise very healthy they still refuse to provide you with insurance.  Yet someone with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other ailments that are under control only by medication are accepted.  Very strange.  No wonder we are 37th.  Perhaps we should take a closer look at the top 5.

Here are some highlights from the video, in case you by-pass it:

Create incentives for physicians to team up.

Reward doctors for good health outcomes.

Make health care education more affordable.

Improve the quality of medical information making its way to doctors and patients.  Less than 1% of our health care spending goes to examining what treatments are more effective.  It can take up to 17 years for the latest research to make its way to an exam room or operating table.  Too many doctors are making decisions without the benefit of latest research.

Mirela,

These numbers and ratings have very little meaning. It all depends on the set of criteria. So, it is quite possible that their health system is not the best.

Maybe it is not ideal here, but destroying it would not make it good for us.

June, unless we start pressuring our politicians to make decisions beneficial to US, they will continue to answer to their "masters", the pharmaceutical lobbyists...

Jon, I think it is going to be difficult to break something that is already broken...

It is shameful that in a country as wealthy as ours, people are not able to obtain health care.  It is time to take special interest to the mat and EARN some more options.  What Obama is advocating is NOT socialized health care.  He is only advocating some new options, injecting competition into the health care market.  Please listen to the video.

"We need to stop denying coverage for pre-existing conditions."

Yet more from the Obama speech.

You know if you consider how many children could have health insurance and health care with the amount of money drug companies spend on lobbyist and advertising it just makes me sick *no pun intended.

Mirela, don't get me started on the health care system of this country! We pay way too much for way too little! I do not believe in socialized medicine but there has to be a better way to distribute health care than highway robbery!
