Health We Go... Dispelling the Socialized Medicine Myth:

Yesterday I posted a blog about Obama's new Health Care proposal.  I embedded a video with Obama's speech at the AMA, in which he gave a thorough overview of his plan.  I have received e-mails from some of my fellow AR members denoting the many horrors of other, supposedly flawed Health Care systems with the warning:  "Be careful what you wish for!"

As a poor immigrant to this country, I have witnessed firsthand the horrors of our own system, where a lack of insurance garners you a place in the sitting room of the hospital emergency facility and not much more.  After a major heart attack, my father was simply shuffled around the emergency waiting rooms for many hours without an examination or treatment and sent home with directions to take two aspirins if he felt ill.  We did not have health insurance and that hospital did not take kindly to folks like us...

That was many years ago.  We are no longer poor immigrants and yes, we do have health insurance that we pay a mint for.  My experience with the "benevolence" of medical facilities in America ensures that I will pay my last dime to stay insured...

The video posted in yesterday's blog gave detailed information about Obama's plan.   While I appreciate everyone's point of view, I urge you to watch the video first, before deciding on the value of his proposal.  It is infinitely easier to just follow the well paid media mongers, point fingers and sentence Obama's proposal to "socialized" medicine status.  The very word sends shivers up and down our spines, mine included.

The proposal does no such thing.  It simply offers a healthy dosage of competition for the fat insurance corporations and some brilliant new ways to update an antiquated system and bring it into the new technology era.  I urge you to watch the video, then, tell me what you think of his proposal!

How the weakest members of a society are treated denotes the civilization of that society...

I am all for all Americans (legals) having health care. But I called my senator, a republican that supports the bill and ask him the same thing I ask anyone that is for it. If it is so good then why doesn't congress have it for themselves or if we all deserve helthcare, why can't it be what congress has.

Mirela,

I understand your feelings ( I have been down with no insurance before many years ago) .  While Charles has a point my question is simply how are we going to pay for this? I whole heartedly believe in health care for everyone.   My concerns of socialism are more about the business sector such as that auto industry, banking, and other captialist ventures turned government owned.  Also we have such systems in place like the constitution and the seperation of the legislative branch and the executive branch.   But, as we have started to work around our systems (the czars are a prime example)  Are we going to elimnate the legislative branch since the czars do not report to them or are responsible to them for anything they simply report to the executive branch.  I get suspicious of work arounds.

Larry, I know what you mean.  The truth is that it is so complex that few really understand it.  I simply agree with things disclosed in his speech: I welcome competition for the fat insurance companies and improved communication should do much to lessen the financial burden and improve treatments.  I would love to see some change in the American Medical Care Arena...

I am an American and my family is without health insurance.  I am finding that most of the people against any kind of National Health Care Plan already are insured.  Did you know that hospitals have two different rates for their patients.  A rate for people covered by insurance and a rate for people who don't have insurance.  It cost me over $12,000 for the birth of my daughter.  Had I had insurance the total cost charged to the insurance company - $2400 of which the insured only pays their deductible.  I paid in cash and it cost me $4700.  Why?

The question of how do we pay for it is moot:  we're already paying for it but it's not going to the right pockets.  Companies can't afford to hire people because they cannot pay enough for insurance and the costs keep going up.  People cannot start businesses because of fears that they will not be able to get insurance or properly provide for their families.  People without insurance make the rest of us have to pay more to subsidize their care.

The fear-mongering around this issue blows my mind.  I've already had to deal with insurance company bureaucrats making decisions about my healthcare--why should I fear a government bureaucrat who is at least accountable (I pay taxes and can call my representatives if necessary).  Healthcare companies are not accountable to anyone except their stockholders.

Thanks, Mirela, for stepping out and taking a stand on this.

Charles:  From FEMA's hidden city which will accomodate all politicians and their "bosses" in case a a nuclear wipe-out, to various other "perks"...  our politicians have NOTHING in common with the common American, health care included!

Larry:  If our tax dollars went to humane causes instead of "special interest" targets, the weakest members of our society would be cared for properly and the rest of us will have a much higher standard of living.  I think a lot of us feel that way nowadays...

At this juncture, all we have are questions.  Nothing in our health care system makes any sense anymore.  The abuse is overt and costly.  We simply can not afford to be complacent anymore!

Kabir:  Be it in person, or via the written word, your brilliant mind has produced a succinct explanation and a palatable grain of TRUTH.  I hope others are paying attention to this issue before it gets buried again...
