The Surprising Science of Motivation

 

The new Business Operating System is based on three things:

 

1.     Autonomy:  The urge to direct our own lives.

2.     Mastery:  The desire to get better and better at something that matters.

3.     Purpose:  The yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves.

 

The 20% rule Google employs:  Engineers can work on anything they want for 20% of the time.  Almost half of the all the new Google products were birthed during this 20% time.


There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does.  The typical Rewards programs 20th century businesses employ (the carrots and sticks philosophy) work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances.  The secret to motivating people to produce lies in the unseen intrinsic drive to do things because they matter.


There is a great business lesson here.  I hope you take the time to watch this important video.  Your company’s future productivity may hinge on it.

Mirela, letting people be free to create and not control them with carrots and sticks allows them to go the furthest. I always like the TED talks. I always do things that matter and are fun!!Thanks.

Hi Mirela,

I did enjoy the video.What I've learned from it?

This guy is a smooth operator,he is still paying for the law school but he can't practice the law ,what he even said,he is a good talker,he sells.Man is a salesman,he sells software and business concepts.What he did wrong once he wasted a lot of money for a law school.He could work in sales long time ago and he would make a lot of money,besides he wouldn't have this loan today.
