I just finished giving an agent a counter to an offer his clients made on one of my listings. He questioned me on an issue. He authoritatively explained to me what the paragraph meant and condescendingly asked how long I had been in Real Estate.
I've been waiting for this one! Ok, here's a rendition of just how it went down:
Good old boy Agent: "... That's what that paragraph says! Mirela, how long have you been in Real Estate?" You have to envision his tone here, done in that superior "teacher to student" voice that an older, southern man naturally assumes when dealing with a young woman.
Me: "I've been a Realtor since 1988. I am a Broker in Charge in both South Carolina AND North Carolina. I am a GRI, ABR, currently taking RLI classes and ..."
Good old boy Agent: "OK, OK, OK, fine!" He quickly interrupted my barrage of accreditations. "Sorry!" he mustered in a muffled tone. Translation - "Sorry!" as in "sorry, I couldn't put one over on you"...
Ah, education, it sure comes in handy!

Mirela - Way to go! The education certainly pays off for us all.
Marc: I couldn't agree with you more!
Karen: Thank you for your comment!
Brian: That's what I usually do. This guy just pressed the wrong button...
Debbie, you go girl! That was a great story. Thanks for sharing!
Mirela,
What a wonderful, funny story. I know how this can be - sometimes despite all the education, " Good old boy" as you phrased it can't help but think he has an advantage despite all of the degrees and education one may possess.
As a former English teacher and administrator who grew up in Conway, I can only imagine how the words such as "honey" came about until GRI, ABR, and other letters of the alphabet arose. I was just having this discussion with some former colleagues & teachers tonight. Should we say "Ignorance is bliss, or is that just what others want us to believe.?"
Great job speaking up for yourself and your profession! Hopefully, I can learn some tips from you. Thanks for sharing and adding reality to the subject.
Thank you, Wendy for those kind words!
Me and the "good old boy" are getting along beautifully now. We have a deal together and he has been a lovely man. Sometimes we just have to (please excuse me for being crude here) "piss our turf", sort of speak... I'm pretty good at that. Ok, ok, ok... for all of you who know me: I am very good at that!
If you are not going to stand up for yourself, who will?
See there Mirela, you handled this all too professionally. You should have threatened to drive over to his place and kick the living.....uh, sorry, I just watched a Dirty Harry movie.
You're absolutely correct. Never argue with the ignorant or you'll both lose.
Ha,ha, that is too funny! I read your comment on my blackberry during a business meeting and I burst out laughing. Oops!
Thanks, Guy, for adding color to my day!
