The Art of Being Happy - Part II - Happy vs. Unhappy

Happy people are always grateful for everything.  They express their gratitude often.  They thank God for their health.  They thank their friends and family for small and big favors.  They praise people.  They always have a smile to share with someone, or a kind word, or gesture.  They are quick to offer you some of their food if they are eating.  They are quick to offer you help when you need it.   Happy people believe in something bigger than themselves.  They read the Bible, the Koran or the Talmud.  Happy people believe there is a rule to the World, a certain way that things work and they are respectful and mindful of it.

Happy people say things like:

Don't be so hard on yourself!

Don't worry about it!  You'll do better the next time!

We're so blessed!

I couldn't have done it without you!

I am so grateful for ...

By contrast, unhappy people do not believe in anything bigger than themselves.  To them the world is an inhospitable place, a dog eat dog sort of world.  They always look for the easy way to get things done.  They don't push themselves.  They have a lot of wishes, but no goals.  They know that someday they'll get somewhere, they just don't know where...

Unhappy people think that mommy and daddy still owes them, or the World owes them, or someone else does.  They'd be happy if only they had this, or that.  Unhappy people cheat and lie.  Unhappy people think that today sucks and tomorrow will be even worse.

Unhappy people say things like:

What's in it for me?

When do I get mine?

Why do I always get the short end of the stick?

If we had a happiness scale, with the happiest people located at a 10 on that scale and the unhappiest people at a zero, them most of us would fall somewhere between the two numbers.   Where are you?  Are you at 8 or are you at 4?

I like to think of myself as being happy... I am sure I have my dark and cloudy moments as well... But over all I would MUCH rather be smiling!

I sat down thinking that I would write a short blog on the art of being happy to help my chronically depressed friend.  The words started pouring out and I wrote non stop for several hours.  I now have a dozen blogs on the subject and information that has been eye opening, even to myself.

They call it "The Flow", that magical place that an artist can tap on rare occasion, a higher force that uses the artist as mere vehicle.  Although I wrote the words, they came from a higher source and starting with the very next post on the subject (The Art of Being Happy - Part III), you'll see exactly what I mean...

Stay tuned!

I am thinking most of the time at least an 8.  Although I do have a 4 day now and then.

Hi Mirela, Given the choice, I always choose happy, and seek out happy people ~ I empathize with the unhappy people in my life, and often they can really get me down! I find it difficult to pick them up when they are "happy" staying down!!

Mirela - I like your style!  Life is too short to be unhappy or to make others unhappy!

I just realized this morning how I "drifted" during the Holidays.  Need to focus on Christ, but focused on Christmas and lost Christ.  Glad I caught it b/4 the new year.

Mirela, I would hope for an 8 but am probably closer to a 6.  I need improvement!

Mirela,

I am usually happy by nature.   I am always aiming towards being happy and to do simple things for people around me to make their day a little happier.  It is amazing how a simple smile can cheer up people around us.   Thank you for another great post!

Mirela:  I have just been released from the hospital on the day before Christmas.  While there, I must admit I grew to a pretty good awareness of the small things I DID have that I was really very thankful for.

As far as everyday living... I must say that I always try and find something nice to say to other people.  They often remark about it, and then I say something silly about how it is my job to spread happiness wherever I go.  We both laugh... and there, gee whiz, I have done it again.

Even if I am not happy myself, and I admit that there are many things I could point at, I know that everyone benefits when I try and be nice.  It works for me.  Thanks for sharing.

By the way... I have been meaning to tell you how great your hair looks in the picture you use on Active Rain.  I just love the curls.  Take care... :)

I try to stay positive and keep going in a forward motion..I know I am more on the top of the scale than the bottom! Thank you for the reminder to stay positive and be happy about ourselves!

Caren:  Thank you for your candid comment!  Please come back for the next blog in the series, to be posted tomorrow (I have a dozen blogs on the Art of Being Happy).

Karen:  Thank you for the compliment!  That picture is from last year.  My hair is a lot longer now, but still very curly.  I've been taking BioSil and Shen Min (both from the health food store) and my hair and nails have been growing like crazy.  It's incredible how well these two products work.  I should write a blog about them.

Karen:  There is nothing like a stay in the hospital to make you more appreciative of EVERYTHING.  I recommend just hanging around any hospital or nursing home when your spirits are low.  After about an hour there you walk out with renewed appreciation for all that you do have!

I'm glad that you got out in time for Christmas!
